This month we introduce Dr Julian Stella from University Hospital Geelong.  Welcome to PREDICT Julian.

I am a Senior Staff Specialist at University Hospital Geelong (UHG) Emergency Department in Geelong Victoria. UHG is a mixed ED which over 70,000 patients annually of which more than a quarter are children. I am the Head of research in the ED and also help oversee the Deakin medical student experience in the ED.

We are interested in a broad range of systems, public health, education and clinical research. The department has participated in a number of funded national, international and local research projects and already has a number of active PREDICT researchers.

 

BellPIC study: A randomised, triple blinded, placebo controlled trial for the use of prednisolone to improve recovery from Bell’s palsy at 1 month.

Recruitment finished September 1st 2020.

Since commencement of recruitment in 2015 at 10 hospitals within the Australian and New Zealand PREDICT research network, we have randomised 186 participants aged between 6 months and 18 years of age.

A HUGE thank you to all the sites who have dedicated their time and expertise to contributing to this fantastic recruitment number and data collection. With this large multicentre randomised trial, it will allow the definitive assessment of the efficacy of prednisolone compared with placebo in the treatment of Bell’s palsy in children.

Data cleaning is underway by the RCH Research Trial Co-ordinator, with participant follow up continuing until March 2021 and data analysis to be performed mid-2021.

The PREDICT members meeting will be held on Wednesday October 28^th 2020 online via Zoom, time: 11.00am – 2.00pm (AEST).

Please find AGENDA attached. There may be slight adjustments as things progress so check the website for the latest version.  Due to time constraints this year, presentations will be very focused and questions contained.  Written reports on the status of all PREDICT projects and the relevant project contact, will be made available to all members.

An outlook invitation has been sent to all PREDICT members which contains the Zoom link to join the meeting.  All you need to do is to accept the invitation.

All surveys and projects, (including pilot studies) to be carried out with the PREDICT network, must first be submitted to the PREDICT Executive for review and endorsement.

All PREDICT endorsed research that is published needs to conform with our approved Guidelines so please ensure you read our guidelines (updated in February 2020) here.

Key points we wish to bring to your attention are:

• All PREDICT publications must be reviewed by the Chair of PREDICT prior to submission to a journal.
• Please allow approximately 2 weeks for your draft to be reviewed and email Meredith.borland@health.wa.gov.au directly.
• Please read the “Requirements for authorship”  – which provides guidance on how to make authorship decisions when there are large groups of potential authors.
• A new planning template and example is provided.
• Please ensure you acknowledge the Centre for Research Excellence grant using the wording noted in the guidelines.
• Contributors  who do not meet the criteria for authorship but who have contributed to the study should be acknowledged.
• Please remember to acknowledge all funding groups appropriately and invite them to use a prepared media release if available/relevant.

We were pleased to have 9 people nominate themselves for the 8 positions on the next PREDICT Executive (2021 – 2022).

This month we introduce Hannah Elborough from the Emergency Research Group, MCRI.

“Hi everyone, it’s a pleasure and privilege to be part of such a world renowned and dynamic organisation as PREDICT. My background is as an experienced paediatric emergency nurse, originally from the UK, who has a passion for evidence based practice and translating research into practice to improve the outcomes of all sick children. This is what led me to work within the Emergency Research team at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) over 10 years ago. Since then I have also worked in clinical allergy research yet found myself drawn back to emergency research nursing during a pandemic! I look forward to being part of the many innovative research projects at RCH and within the PREDICT network.”

Do you have a research proposal you would like to develop and present to the membership for feedback?

Three proposals will be selected for brief presentation at the PREDICT MEMBERS Meeting (Wednesday 28^th October 11 – 2 (AEST).  Your presentation would be 6 minutes long, (max. 6 slides), 3 minutes is allowed for questions.

Presentation times will be confirmed in early October.   

If you would like to submit a proposal, please email a half to 1 page proposal by Friday 25^th September 2020 to Catherine.wilson@mcri.edu.au 

This proposal could later be developed and submitted to the PREDICT Executive for potential endorsement.

This month we introduce Faye Jordan from The Prince Charles Hospital.  Welcome to PREDICT Faye.

“I work at The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) in Brisbane, a hospital that is approximately 10 km from the major Adult and Children’s Hospitals in Brisbane. It is a busy hospital with a large elderly population, and a separate Children’s emergency department that sees in excess of 30,000 children each year. I am an Emergency Specialist with dual fellowships in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (FRACP) and Emergency Medicine (FACEM). I am a member of our local adult and children’s research committee and assist with the support of research undertaken within our emergency departments. I am especially interested in paediatric emergency medicine and vulnerable adolescents.”
