PROMPT-BOLUS study on sepsis funded!

Congratulations to Franz Babl, Ed Oakley, Stuart Dalziel, Meredith Borland and Elliot Long from the PREDICT group who have been funded for more than $3 million by the Medical Research Futures Fund to participate in the international PROMPT BOLUS study on Sepsis.

The study is an open label randomised trial comparing balanced versus normal saline fluid treatment in children with sepsis.

Australian and New Zealand sites in PREDICT will work with the US and Canada (pending funding from NIH and CIHR) to undertake this trial of 8,800 children and provide the evidence necessary to change clinical practice worldwide and in turn save thousands of children’s lives.

The trial was one of three to share in $5 million to allow Australian researchers and patients to take part in international clinical trials of new, lifesaving treatments.

We will be looking for investigators and sites to participate (13 sites funded with RA cover at all sites for 4.5 years) and look forward to sharing further news soon. For questions contact franz.babl@rch.org.au.

“Getting to know you” – Peter Snelling

Our “Getting to Know You” segment ensures PREDICT members are aware of new members, their interests and areas of expertise and where they are located.  This month we introduce Dr Peter Snelling from Gold Coast University Hospital.

“I am a dual qualified general paediatrician and emergency physician working at the Gold Coast University Hospital Emergency Department.  My main research interest is point-of-care ultrasound, especially as it applies within paediatric emergency medicine.”

“Getting to know you” – meet Nicola Arnold

Our “Getting to Know You” segment ensures PREDICT members are aware of new members, their interests and areas of expertise and where they are located.  This month we introduce Nicola Arnold from Werribee Mercy Hospital.

“I am the clinical nurse educator in the emergency department at Werribee Mercy Hospital. The hospital has recently opened a paediatric department, which means that the ED now sees and admits, higher acuity paediatric patients. The hospital sees approximately 25–30 paediatric cases a day, and this number will only keep growing. My areas of interest involve the integrated use of paediatric education to nursing and medical staff – through in-situ simulations and more structured simulations, in order to boost confidence and knowledge base amongst staff.

I look forward to disseminating up to date, relevant research to my staff in order to improve our practice in the department.”

Getting to know you – meet Doris Tham

Our “Getting to Know You” segment ensures PREDICT members are aware of new members, their interests and areas of expertise and where they are located.  This month we introduce Doris Tham from Sunshine Hospital and Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne.

“I am a Paediatric Emergency Physician, from FRACP background, currently working at Sunshine hospital (mix adult/ paed ED) and The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne in Victoria. With my PREDICT liaison role at Sunshine hospital, I am looking forward to take on more active role in research. I also have strong interest in improving clinician-parents communication, parent education and quality of discharge advise.”

WRAP IT UP – Merry Christmas from PREDICT IN 2019!

2019 has been a big year for PREDICT with significant growth in our network.  It also marks the final year of the current NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence (CRE) collaboration and the beginning of the next NHMRC CRE which will promote more excellent research for the 2020-2024 period.

Please join us in reflecting on these and other outstanding achievements:

  • PREDICT now has 122 members – in the past year we welcomed 34 new members.
  • PREDICT has commenced working actively with consumers in our research and the Perth Children’s Hospital ED team have their own designated ED consumer group.
  • 55 hospitals across Australia and New Zealand have been actively involved in PREDICT research!
  • Data collection was completed for the APHIRST-Gap, CSE registry pilot and the Asthma Retrospective studies!
  • The international PERN pneumonia and the PERC BIPED (Dexamethasone and Adrenalin for bronchiolitis) studies have commenced.
  • The PREDICT Executive reviewed and endorsed 10 new projects which are now in various stages of development.
  • The successful completion of 3 PhDs (Elliot Long, Jeremy Furyk and Donna Franklin) and continued mentoring of another 5 PhD scholars.

  • The PREDICT prize was awarded at the ACEM meeting to Emma Fauteux-Lamarre, an Advanced PEM Trainee at Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne for her study called “A Double-Blind, Randomised, Placebo-Controlled Trial of Ondansetron to reduce vomiting in children receiving Intranasal Fentanyl and N2O for procedural sedation”
  • The Acute Head Injury Guidelines are drafted – final consultations will be completed early next year!

Thank you to all members and collaborators for your contributions and support.

PREDICT presents at EUSEM 2019

The European Emergency Medicine Congress (EUSEM) was recently held in Prague and was attended by a number of PREDICT members who also presented our research. This unique annual event is the major educational activity organised in Europe for emergency medicine. It is a melting pot for research and educational projects on an international level and promotes international collaboration in the field of Emergency Medicine, facilitating practice and knowledge transfer. The meeting creates the seeds for networking creation and cooperation between national associations for Emergency Medicine.

Natalie Phillips captures the crowd’s attention with her Paediatric Cervical Spine Injury poster presentation.

A great presentation was given by Libby Haskell “Improving the management of infants with bronchiolitis: a cluster randomised controlled trial of tailored knowledge translation in paediatric acute care”.
