Elizabeth Molyneux Prize awarded to PREDICT for Bell’s multicentre trial paper

Each year at the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) Annual Scientific Conference, the prestigious Elizabeth Molyneux Prize is awarded. The prize, named in honour of Professor Elizabeth Molyneux, recognises outstanding work in the field of Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM).  This year, the prize was awarded to PREDICT for the paper “Prednisolone for Bell’s Palsy in children: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre trial” which was presented by Franz Babl at the annual conference in Belfast, UK 4 – 6 October 2022.

Getting to know you – meet Jess McDonald

Our “Getting to Know You” segment ensures PREDICT members are aware of new members, their interests and areas of expertise and where they are located.

This month we introduce from Jess McDonald from Launceston General Hospital and the RCH.

“I am a Paediatric Emergency Physician & clinical lead for paediatrics in the Emergency Department at the Launceston General Hospital. We are a busy mixed, regional Emergency Department supported by an inpatient paediatric unit, caring together for sick Children in Northern Tasmania. I am passionate about improving the early recognition of deterioration & paediatric sepsis. Our department has recently commenced trial of the Tasmanian paediatric sepsis pathway & we look forward to expanding our involvement in paediatric research projects.  I also work part-time in ED at RCH Melbourne”

Getting to know you – meet Tracy Hess

Our “Getting to Know You” segment ensures PREDICT members are aware of new members, their interests and areas of expertise and where they are located.

This month we introduce Tracy Hess from the Mackay Hospital and Health Service.  Tracy says:

“I am a Clinical Research Nurse and work in Mackay Institute of Research and Innovation (MIRI) which is part of the Mackay Hospital and Health Service.  I provide clinical trial support to PIs for all our Anaesthetic Clinical Trials.  Within the anaesthetic department we have developed a Trial Tribe of junior doctors.  My role is to educate and support them to complete daily clinical trial work, such as recruitment of participants, data collection and follow up, ensuring they adhere to trial protocols.  My research passions are anaesthetics, emergency and paediatrics. It is exciting to be involved in research in a such a practical way, contributing to the advancement of health and wellbeing for our consumers”.

Present your “New Research Idea” at PREDICT Members meeting (20/10/22)

We have scheduled up to three  “New research idea” presentations at the PREDICT members meeting being held face to face and via ZOOM on Thursday 20th of October 2021.

Do you have a proposal you would like to develop and present for feedback?

If so, please email the PREDICT research co-ordinator Catherine.wilson@mcri.edu.au, a 1 – 2 page proposal by Friday 9th September 2022.

The 3 researchers selected to present their idea will receive mentoring from one of the PREDICT Executive with relevant expertise.

Presenters will be given 5 minutes to present the idea with an extra 10 minutes for discussion and questions. Presentations will be confirmed by 16th September 2022 and presentation times given later on.

 

Getting to know you – meet Nathan Forsyth

Our “Getting to Know You” segment ensures PREDICT members are aware of new members, their interests and areas of expertise and where they are located.

This month we introduce Nathan Forsyth from RCH and Swinburne University in Melbourne.

“I work at the Royal Children’s Hospital and Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia. I am a Clinical Nurse Specialist and Lecturer of Nursing with job roles in clinical, quality improvement and academic spaces. My research interests are in peripheral vascular access and the “emerging” use of ultrasound to guide IV placement in our paediatric population. I am currently looking at the characteristics of a nurse-led ultrasound IV team in paeds who present to ED.”
